Why is my downloaded video blurry?

Updated

A downloaded video can never be sharper than the copy the platform keeps. Most blurry downloads come from that limit, from a low-quality upload, or from being compressed again after you saved them.

Platforms shrink every upload

Every platform re-encodes what creators upload, to save space and data. A video filmed in 4K on a phone is usually kept at 1080p or 720p, with far less detail per second. Downloading gives you that stored copy as it is, and no tool can bring back detail the platform has thrown away.

What each platform keeps

  • TikTok: one file per video, usually 720p or 1080p. There's no sharper version to choose.
  • Instagram: the largest size it serves to logged-out visitors, usually 720p or 1080p. Many Reels are only available at 720p, even when they were filmed in higher quality.
  • X: up to five sizes, from small data-saving copies up to 1080p. The top one in the list is the sharpest.
  • Facebook: HD and SD copies. HD is at the top of the list when Facebook has it.
  • Pinterest, Bluesky, Twitch and Dailymotion: up to 1080p, depending on what was uploaded.

How to get the sharpest copy

  1. When a post lists several qualities, pick the top one. They're listed best first.
  2. Copy the link of the original post, not a repost or a screen recording of it. Reposts are often compressed again.
  3. Edit only when you need to. Cropping a video, or fitting it to a size limit, makes the editor encode it again.

What blurs a video after you save it

  • Messaging apps: WhatsApp and many others compress videos again when you send them. Sending the video as a document keeps the original file.
  • Uploading it somewhere else: each platform compresses it again, losing a little more detail each time.
  • Screen recording: it captures your screen and compresses it, never the original file.
  • “Enhance” and upscaling tools: they make a video bigger, but they guess at detail rather than restore it.

When the original is low quality

If the creator uploaded a small or blurry video, or a re-upload of someone else's, the platform's copy is low quality too, and so is every download of it. Watch the post full screen in the app: if it's soft there, it will be soft in the file.

Frequently asked questions

Can PastePull download in 4K?

We always list the largest copy the platform offers. On the platforms we support, that's usually 1080p at most.

Does PastePull lower the quality?

No. We don't re-encode downloads: you get the platform's file as it is. When the picture and sound arrive separately, we join them without changing either.

Why is the file smaller than I expected?

Platforms use efficient formats and modest data rates, so a minute of 1080p video is often only 10 to 30 MB. A small file isn't a damaged one.
